Do you know Dewi Sartika? or maybe you have known
her name for a long time but doesn’t know her story? Well, let me tell you a
little bit about Dewi Sartika in a short way 🤗
Dewi Sartika
was born on 4th of December 1884, in Cicalengka, Bandung. Her parent is Raden
Somanagara and Nyi Raden Rajapermas. Dewi
Sartika born in a Sundanese noble family. Her parents were
fighting hard to send him to the School of the Netherlands because that time sending women to a school was againts the culture. She
often pretended to be a teacher while playing with her parents after
school. After her father died and her mom was exiled to Ternate, she lived with
her uncle, Arya, who was the Governor of Cicalengka that time. Her uncle
teached her about Sundanese culture and made her gained the knowledge about
Sundanese culture.
In
1899 she moved to Bandung and stay with her mother. She became more determined
to reach her goal to create a school that aimed to promote women’s education. After
a long live
journey, finally for the first time, she managed to open a school called “Sakola
Istri” or “Sakola Perempuan” on January 16, 1904.
It was located in Bandung
district hall, she was helped by her two cousins, Ny. Poerwa and Nyi. Oewid. In
1912, she had 9 Sakola Istri in Pasundan then it was renamed into “ Sakola
Kautamaan Istri”. Exactly in 1920 the whole region of Pasundan owned Sakola
Kautamaan Istri.

1906, Dewi Sartika married Raden Kanduruhan Agah Suriawinata, who was a teacher
at Sekolah Karang Pamulang and they have a son named Raden Atot.
Dewi
Sartika died on September 11th, 1947 in Tasikmalaya while she was evacuating
from Bandung due to independence war. She died at the age of 62 years old. She
was buried in the funeral in Cigagadon rahayu village district of Cincem.
